Nicaragua to Host International Surfing Championship July 14-22, 2012

Surf spacer

For the first time, Nicaragua will host the 2012 ISA World Masters Surfing Championships this summer. The Masters event brings together the top over-35 surfers in the world. Many of the competitors are former professional surfers and some are even former world champions.

The International Surfing Association chose Nicaragua for their fifth annual event because Nicaragua is "the land of constant offshore winds!" The championship will take place during the season known as "little summer," or Veranillo in Nicaragua, when conditions usually boast favorable winds and great waves. Nicaragua has long been a popular surfing destination among those "in the know," but it won't stay the best-kept surfing destination for long!

"We, the people of Nicaragua, are very excited and proud to have won the bid to host the 2012 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship," said Mario Salinas, Minister of Tourism. "It gives us the chance to show not only our beautiful natural landscapes, beaches and waves, but also our culture and warm hospitality."

The event will be held on the beaches on the southwest coast of Nicaragua – beaches which are exposed to the Lago de Nicaragua effect. Due to the lake's large expanse of water, winds blow offshore on the Pacific side of the country more than 300 days out of the year and make them perfect for surfing. Visit Ometepe Island

Ometepe Island spacer The largest volcanic lake island on the planet, Ometepe was named a UNESCO Biosphere Preserve in 2011. Formed by two towering volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, the tropical forested island encompasses more than 276 square kilometers and is home to nearly 40,000 residents who live an agrarian life, harvesting plantains, rice, tobacco, sugar cane and coffee, some catering to the growing influx of tourists. Visitors can access the island by ferry boats that run from Granada, San Carlos and a port near Rivas, which is close to the popular Pacific beach town of San Juan del Sur. Once on this magically remote island, you can enjoy activities that range from hiking, paragliding, fishing, mountain biking and kayaking, to volunteering. A favorite with volcano climbers, the active volcano Concepción has slopes covered with tropical dry forest, while dormant Maderas is often wrapped in a deep cloud forest and boasts a beautiful lagoon on top of the crater. Ometepe Island was once considered sacred ground by ancient cultures, and you can still find many ceremonial carvings and lingering legends. A visit to Ometepe has been described as a sensory experience filled with the sounds of wildlife and views of nature permeated by a mystical presence. Enjoy the Street Food of Nicaragua

food spacer

In Nicaragua's capital city of Managua, the main streets are lined with "fritangas," or street food joints, a popular choice for traditional food in a quick and easy style. A characteristic Nicaragua meal might include a meat like chicken, pork, beef or fresh seafood from Nicaragua's expansive coasts, deep-fried plantains, rice and beans ("gallo pinto") and a cabbage salad. A very popular Nicaraguan dish most often available on weekends is the Nacatamal, a banana leaf filled with corn, pork or chicken, rice, potatoes, onion and sometime raisins. Deep-fried pork or chicken enchiladas and grilled beef with plantains are also favorites at the fritangas. In the colonial city of Granada, the specialty is the "Vigoron" pork, with fried pig skin "Chicharones" with yucca and cabbage salad a classic street food offering. On your way to the Colonial City of Leon you can have also a "Quesillo": A tortilla stuffed with cheese and served with cream, onion, vinegar and chile, these are only some of the option that you will be able to enjoy during your visit!

Buen Provecho!
