Nicaragua is a Top Travel Destination for 2015

Nicaragua continues to be a popular travel spot in 2015 and people are taking note. Top national and regional magazines, newspapers and websites are listing the country as a hot vacation destination in the New Year. Here are a few recent articles that highlight just some of what Nicaragua has to offer:

  • Travel + Leisure, one of the top U.S. travel magazines, listed Nicaragua as one of the “Best Places to Travel in 2015,” positioning the country as an exciting and diversified travel gem for eco-adventurers. The coveted listing presents the new laid-back luxury retreat Tribal Hotel, which is located in the heart of the charming town of Granada, as well as up-and-coming property The Inn at Rancho Santana, which debuts in March on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast, and finally the luxury resort Mukul Beach, Golf & Spa.

  • Yahoo! Finance’s “Best Places to Travel in 2015” touts Nicaragua’s emerging luxury ecotourism scene, making mention of its charming colonial towns, tropical environment and great resort options that are aplenty throughout the destination

  • The Boston Globe’s highly regarded travel column listed Nicaragua as one of “Where To Go in 2015” destinations, spotlighting the country’s rich biodiversity, including Lake Nicaragua and Ometepe Island, as well as culture in Granada and Leon, and surf in San Juan del Sur

  • The Globe and Mail, one of the top Canadian newspapers, recognized Nicaragua in its list of “2015’s Top 10 Destinations.” The article highlighted activities including climbing and sandboarding down volcanoes, enjoying hot springs, and exploring lush rainforests. The listing also showcased new and renovated properties in Nicaragua including Aqua Wellness Resort, Tribal Hotel and Bubu Hotel.

  • SmarterTravel.com, a popular travel news website, featured Nicaragua as one of 10 countries in its list of “Best Dream Trips for 2015.” The article highlighted adventure activities such as ashboarding at Cerro Negro volcano, surfing at world-class coastal breaks, and more.

Nicaragua hasn’t just been touted on print pages and online – television has taken to the destination for its picturesque and diverse environments, making the country a favorite backdrop for filming recently. In 2014, the following TV shows filmed and aired throughout the year, showcasing Nicaragua’s rich cultural heritage and biodiversity:

  • CBS’ “Survivor: San Juan Del Sur”: Filmed in the popular beach town of San Juan Del Sur, the same location as 2010’s “Survivor: Nicaragua” and 2011’s “Survivor: Redemption Island,” this fan favorite aired in the fall of 2014.

  • The Discovery Channel’s “Dude You’re Screwed“: The network’s premier adventure series features outdoor experts surviving challenging environments and finding their way back to civilization within 100 hours. The Nicaragua episode followed one of the experts, an ex-Navy SEAL, as he made his way from the wilderness skirting natural wildlife and crossed Lake Nicaragua on a raft before receiving a warm welcome from the local Nicaraguan community.

  • TLC’s “90 Day Fiancé”: Managua’s hustle and bustle was the perfect setting for Nicaragua’s famous pop star Yamir to meet up with his long-distance love, followed by 90 days of living in Managua together before making a decision regarding their future. The episode followed Yamir’s love trials & tribulations, as well as showcased the music and culture of Nicaragua.

New Tourism Developments to Anticipate in 2015

As tourism to Nicaragua continues to grow, new hotels and infrastructure additions throughout the country grow too. A few noteworthy happenings coming in 2015 include:

  • New hotel: The Inn at Rancho Santana – Located on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, the picturesque ┬áproperty of Rancho Santana will debut a boutique hotel in March: The Inn at Rancho Santana. The 17-room retreat will be a rustic but stylish hideaway within the larger ranch, perfect for those seeking a more intimate setting.

  • A new private airport along the Emerald Coast – A new small-scale international gateway will open at the end of the year. The airport, funded by Guacalito de la Isla, will be available to the public and surrounding properties, allowing for small planes and visitors to easily access the Pacific Coast.

  • Renovation: Aqua Wellness Resort – This eco-luxury property will enlarge its spa, plus add a swimming pool, new restaurant and new “treehouse” accommodations.

Nicaragua Featured as Green Energy Leader by WWF

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) has taken note of Nicaragua’s superb efforts in transforming the energy paradigm using its natural resources, and featured the country as one of the Green Energy Leaders in Latin America. With renewable energy accounting for 52 percent of Nicaragua’s energy supply, the WWF report specifically praised the progress of geothermal energy – from none produced 20 years ago to supplying 16 percent of the country’s electricity in 2014! Nicaragua continues to make great strides in green energy and aims to grow its renewable energy usage even further in 2015 and beyond. A true global leader in eco-friendliness!
