Nicaragua’s Majestic Ometepe Island

Surf Seasons spacer Formed of two majestic volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, Ometepe Island rises out of Lake Nicaragua and is one of the largest freshwater islands in the world. The island encompasses more than 171 square miles of nature and wildlife and is home to nearly 40,000 residents who live an agrarian life, harvesting plantains, rice, tobacco, sugar cane and coffee. With its diverse habitats and dazzling array of wildlife, Ometepe was named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011.

Surfing the Seasons

Ometepe Island has become a favorite among hikers eager to take on a volcano – or in this case, two. Concepción volcano is active and has slopes that are covered by a tropical dry forest, while Maderas is dormant, with a deep cloud forest and beautiful lagoon atop its crater. In addition to hiking, Ometepe is an excellent destination for paragliding, fishing, mountain biking, and kayaking. Once considered sacred ground by the Nahuatl people, remnants of ancient ceremonial carvings and stone idols can still be seen on the volcanoes’ slopes. Ometepe is accessible by ferry boats, which run from Granada, San Carlos, and a port near Rivas, which is close to the popular Pacific beach town of San Juan del Sur.

Green Season in Nicaragua

Nicaragua’s tropical season has just begun and will last until November. “Green Season” is the region’s wet season, a time where travelers can experience lush vegetation and witness an abundance of flora and fauna. Known for weather variations that range from sunshine and 80̊F weather to cool tropical afternoon showers, green season has become popular among travelers due to lower airfares, great deals on accommodation and activities, and a decrease in the number of crowds.

Green season is also the best time for some of the country’s most popular activities, including surfing along the Pacific Coast; zip-lining through the lush jungles; fishing on Nicaragua’s coasts, lakes and rivers; and hiking up volcanoes and through the country’s famed cloud forests.
