Nicaragua Comes to North America – Fort Lauderdale & Toronto

A Nicaragua Road Show, which kicked off earlier this year with events in LA and DC, will soon be making waves with influencers in Toronto and Fort Lauderdale. The Florida event takes place Tuesday, October 21 and the Toronto event Thursday, October 23. Traveling through Nicaragua’s Northern Highlands

Coffee

Tobacco

spacer

Travelers looking to go beyond the traditional beach escape or colonial city tour when visiting Nicaragua will enjoy the country’s Northern Highlands that encompass northwestern valleys and central highlands.

Northern Highlands

Less populated and developed than its southern counterparts (the Pacific lowlands and Caribbean lowlands), the northern region of Nicaragua offers travelers some of the country’s most lush settings, adventurous backdrops and numerous waterfalls. Typically much cooler and wetter than the coasts, this mountainous terrain is a sight to be seen and an adventure not to be missed.

Not only is the region home to the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve, the largest rainforest north of the Amazon in Brazil and a UNESCO biosphere reserve, but it also hosts Nicaragua’s most fertile soil, allowing the area to lead the country in coffee and tobacco production.

Visitors to these diverse alpine highlands will take joy in witnessing the flora and fauna at play. The bright-green plantations, scenic trails, idyllic views, and farm villages made up of adobe homes with clay-tile roofs provide an unequaled cultural and lively setting for a variety of activities ranging from horse-back riding, hiking, mountain biking, birding and trail running, among others.

ESTELI
Located just 93 miles north of Managua, “The Diamond of the Segovias,” as Estelí is called, is one of the largest cities in Nicaragua and an active commercial center for the region. Although fairly low-key, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the country as it offers economic opportunity due to the growth of its industrial and commercial enterprises.

Northern Towns

Forested mountains of mahogany, cedar and pines, covered with tropical flowers inlaid in beds of moss, hug the city, allowing for a pleasant climate throughout the year.

Coffee, beans and other vegetables are grown in the surrounding farms, however its popular tobacco export is the area’s shining star.

What to do in or near Estelí

  • Visit the Central Park and the Cathedral of Estelí
  • Tour of a cigar factory and roll your own cigars
  • Gastronomy: Dine on the area’s mountain diet
  • Visit the Miraflor Natural Reserve and waterfall
  • Walk through town and view the murals
  • Tour museums

MATAGALPA
Matagalpa, known as the “Pearl of the North” because of its rich soil and favored location for agricultural activity, is located 80 miles northeast of Managua. It is one of the most mountainous departments in Nicaragua and has a cool, but tropical climate. It is the favored city in the region as it offers a hipper vibe and more manicured setting.

Northern Towns

There are two distinct areas within this department: one is the capital and business center, which is also known as Matagalpa, and the second is the mountainous region just outside of town where eco-resorts dwell.

Matagalpa offers travelers a variety of accommodation, restaurants and cultural activities, and the mountains set the scene for eco-tourism visits and activities like hiking and trail running.

Of the three top departments in the region, Matagalpa offers the most diverse natural resources, producing coffee, cattle, vegetables, wood and gold.

JINOTEGA
Located 100 miles north of Managua, Jinotega – which is the name of both the department and its capital city – is a powerhouse in the country’s coffee industry, producing more than three quarters of Nicaragua’s coffee. It is also home to the country’s first artificial lake, open for tourist excursions such as fishing or horseback riding around perimeter, and which provides much of the electricity for Nicaragua.

Northern Towns

The city is surrounded by mountains and the department is peppered with large agricultural farms, rivers, rural towns and indigenous communities. Jinotega is also known as “The City of the Mist” due to the constant fan of mist sweeping through the area.
